São Paulo – Egypt’s beef imports from Brazil jumped fourfold in January. The Arab country imported 18,851 tonnes from Brazil, up 318,7% from 4,501 in January 2021, meatpacker association Abrafrigo reported based on data compiled by the Secretariat of Foreign Trade of the Ministry of Economy of Brazil.
With this volume, Egypt ranked second among the leading importers of beef from Brazil, only behind China, which remains the largest buyer despite having stepped down imports in January. The Chinese acquired 79,896 tonnes from Brazil in January 2021 and 66,101 tonnes last month, down 14.5%. The third largest buyer was the United States, whose purchases have also seen a significant year-on-year increase of 526,3%, from 2,748 to 17,210 tonnes.
Despite the decreased exports to China, Brazil managed to step up the volume of total beef exports (raw and processed) by 25.85% in January, from 126,138 tonnes in January 2021 to 159,997 tonnes last month. The year-on-year increase in revenue was even larger, at 46%, from USD 549.1 million to USD 803.6 million.
