São Paulo – Egypt’s food exports revenue increased by 19% in 2021 compared to the previous year, reaching USD 4.1 billion. The information was announced to the Egyptian press by the president of the Food Export Council, Hany Barzy, this Wednesday (2).
In a Council statement, Barzy noted the month of June saw the most notable boost in shipments, totaling USD 393 million. Arab countries lead the list of buyers of processed food from Egypt. According to the statement, exports to the Arabs hit about USD 2.23 billion, representing 54% of exported food last year.
In a previous statement, Egypt’s minister of Trade and Industry, Nevine Gamea, said the essential crops exported by the country include rice, grains, onions, garlic, potatoes, vegetables, fruits, citrus, and peanuts; and the most important markets are Russia, Saudi Arabia, Great Britain, and the United Arab Emirates.

After the Arab bloc, the European Union came second in the list of the most critical regions for Egypt in the food sector. Revenue from sales to the group of European countries totaled USD 634 million, up 29% from 2020. In 2021, the EU accounted for 15% of total food exports by Egypt.
Non-Arab African countries clinched the third spot, generating revenue of USD 404 million in 2021 and representing 10% of exports in the sector.
Revenue from food exports to the United States grew 23% last year, tallying USD 223 million. The figure represents 5% of Egypt’s food exports. The remaining countries yielded USD 616 million in revenue during 2021, 15% of the total for the year.
