São Paulo – In 2050, Brazil will have the same number of inhabitants in the age groups between 0 and 14 years and 65 years and above, according to the Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
Both groups will represent 18% of the 259.8 million inhabitants that should be living in the country. This growth in the senior population should create business opportunities in the country.
This analysis is made by the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (Sebrae) consultant, José Castro Schwartz. "The ageing of the population creates a demand for specific services in the health, culture and entertainment areas", according to Schwartz.
Four years ago the Census indicated that the population in the age group between 0 and 14 years represented 30% of the inhabitants, whereas 5% of the population was above 65 years. Life expectancy amongst Brazilians has been growing since 1940, when it was 40.5 years, going on to 62.6 years in 1980. In 2000, the average longevity reached 70.4 years and should come up to 81.3 years in 2050.
"Whoever wants to do business in Brazil should be aware of two fundamental trends in society. One of them is the ageing of the population", states the Sebrae consultant. The information is from the Sebrae News Agency.
