São São Paulo – Emirates Airline’s air freight division Emirates SkyCargo is expanding its operations in South America. Thursday (10) saw it announce the addition of flights to Bogota, Colombia in partnership with Avianca. The city will get one flight per week starting January 16. This will be the company’s sixth destination in the region.
Emirates SkyCargo South America manager Dener Souza said the weekly frequency flies from Dubai, the UAE – where the company is based – and makes stops in Zaragoza (Spain) and Mexico City (Mexico) before touching down in Bogota every Wednesday at 10 pm. The return flight departs from Colombia at 00:05 am on Wednesday with a stopover in Maastricht (Netherlands) before returning to Dubai.
The route will be flown with Boeing 777 freighters, whose capacity for 100-plus tons and “wide main deck doors allow for the transportation of large and outsized cargo,” Emirates SkyCargo said in a press release.
Partnership
Emirates SkyCargo will work with Avianca in cargo transportation in Bogota. The Latin American carrier will “commercialize the capacity of the Boeing 777 freighter on its return leg from Bogota to Maastricht,” SkyCargo said.
It also said it’s working on a more comprehensive partnership with Avianca, which will see the Dubai company assist the Colombian one in moving cargo from Latin America through its network across the Middle East, Africa and Asia, whereas Avianca will assist Emirates SkyCargo with increasing its reach in South America.
“We welcome Bogota to our global network of over 40 scheduled weekly freighter destinations. South America is one of our main focus regions and we believe that there is a lot of potential for further growth in demand for air cargo capacity in this region,” Emirates’ senior vice president for Cargo Planning & Freighters said. “We are also delighted to be working with Avianca for this freighter service and we look forward to strengthening our partnership to facilitate more trade between customers in South America and the rest of the world,” he added.
South America
In South America, Emirates SkyCargo is currently moving cargo to and from Buenos Aires (Argentina), Rio de Janeiro and Viracopos (Brazil), Santiago (Chile) and Quito (Peru). With the addition of Bogota, the carrier will boast weekly capacity for about 500 tons from the region.
