São Paulo – The attention given by Arab women with personal care created the opportunity for Estek, manufacturer of medical and cosmetic equipment based on the East side of the city of São Paulo, to send one of its products to the Middle East. Since last decade, Carbtek, a dermatological equipment manufactured by the company, is being imported by Kalium Group, from Dubai, which distributes it to other Gulf countries.
“In one year, we shipped close to 30 machines, but now it has slowed down. This year we should export 10 units to the region,” says Juan Lopez, medical advisor of the company and the one responsible for opening the doors of the Middle East market to Estek’s equipment.
According to him, the decline in the volume of exports was due to new certification requirements for the products in the region. During 2016, Estek sought to comply with these new norms, which required major investments. “It’s expected to improve starting next year,” he says.
Lopez says that to negotiate personally he went to the United Arab Emirates about eight years ago. Kalium Group was introduced to him by a friend: “He worked in a company that used to export a type of temporary makeup to this distributor. So this friend of mine introduced us and I travelled to Dubai to close the deal,” he says.
The advisor says he was impressed with the attention women from the Middle East give to personal care. One of the doctors that he had contact with due to the training for the use of the equipment – who, by coincidence, was also Brazilian – said that the use of Carbtek there was due to reasons that were 50% clinical and 50% of personal care.
Carbtek is a carboxytherapy equipment: it administers carbon dioxide subcutaneously to oxygenate the tissue. This treatment stimulates blood flow and helps to reduce stretch marks, cellulite and excess fat.
Despite the fact that Estek produces other clinical, medical and dermatological equipment, Carbtek is the only one exported – in addition to the Middle East, it’s also sold to Europe, Africa and Latin America. According to Lopez, Kalium Group re-distributes it to other countries in the region, such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iraq and Kuwait.
