São Paulo – The architecture of the Rachid Karami International Fair (RKIF) building, designed by Oscar Niemeyer in Tripoli, Lebanon, serves as the backdrop for the photographs in the exhibition A Realm of My Senses by Lebanese photographer Nadine Ashkar. The exhibition will open on Thursday (18) at the Guimarães Rosa Institute in Beirut.
Also known as the “Tripoli International Fair,” the exhibition pavilion was built in the Lebanese coastal city located 81 kilometers north of Beirut. It was designed in 1962 by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer and completed in 1975.
It features geometric shapes and curves that are characteristic of Niemeyer’s work, such as the main boomerang-shaped building used for exhibitions. The architectural complex was recognized in 2023 as a UNESCO World Heritage site, representing Lebanese aspirations and cultural ties with Brazil.
According to the exhibition press release, the forms of “raw concrete” in this architectural landmark are interpreted in the images as symbols of female strength, transformation, and resilience, while exploring themes such as architecture, identity, and memory.
Lebanese photographer Nadine Ashkar offers courses in schools and at her studio, in addition to participating in exhibitions and having shot editorial work with celebrities. Her portfolio includes portraits, interior and architectural photography, and advertising campaigns, including fashion, lingerie, children’s and men’s fashion, jewelry, and more.
