São Paulo – The Brazil pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai world exhibition was voted the world’s best cultural architecture project in the 2023 Building of the Year Award. The award was given by the world’s most visited architecture website, ArchDaily, and the Brazilian project competed with another 4,500. Expo 2020 occurred in the United Arab Emirates from October 2021 to March 2022. Pictured above, a projection of the pavilion.
The Brazilian space was managed by the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil) and jointly designed by the architecture offices of Marta Moreira and Milton Braga (MMBB Arquitetos), Argentine Martin Benavides (Ben-Avid) and José Paulo Gouvêa (JPG.ARQ). The venue hosted events promoting Brazilian products and brands during the six months of the planet’s most prominent exhibition.
The Brazil pavilion was the third most visited at Expo 2020 Dubai, with 2.1 million people, according to ApexBrasil. The place resembled an oasis, with the Brazilian waters as a central element. A reflecting pool where it was possible to walk occupied the center of the space, representing the rivers and mangroves of Brazil. Around it, a tensile structure in steel and light white fabric formed a framework capable of receiving projections, creating an immersive atmosphere of Brazilian images and sounds. The building also had three floors.
