São Paulo – The São Paulo state government will hold, on April 18th, a fair to help refugees and immigrants to find job posts. The Immigrant and Refugee Employment Fair will take place at the Citizenship Integration Center (CIC) of the Immigrant, in the city of São Paulo, and registrations are open until the end of March for the companies interested in offering vacancies in the state.
This is the fair’s third edition. In the first one, early in last year’s second semester, 123 immigrants of seven nationalities visited. In the second, at the end of 2015, 206 foreigners from 28 countries took part. The numbers are expected to double in this next edition, according to Danielle do Prado, Cooperation advisor of the Special Advisor Office for International Affairs (Aeai) of the São Paulo state government, which is the initiative’s organizer.
The companies registering to offer jobs must have a representative in the event to make the registrations, receive resumes or conduct interviews. The company could present vacancies or just compiled a database for opportunities that could arise. The organization expects around ten companies to participate.
Besides recruiting, the fair will have other services, such as lectures on entrepreneurship, basic healthcare services, such as blood pressure measurement, help to put together resumes, clarify legal doubts on the hiring of refugees and legislation. Volunteers can register to help in the event.
According to Prado, the goal is to call out to enterprises that believe in the integration of refugees through labor. The organizers want to provide openings in a variety of fields, but Prado says that in past editions, most jobs were basic or manual ones. The fair will run from 9am to 5pm and refugees are not required to register beforehand.
According to information released by Aeai based on data from the National Committee on Refugees (Conare), the state of São Paulo gets 40% of all asylum requests in Brazil. That number is on the rise. In 2010, 310 people applied for asylum in the state, and by 2014 there were 5,136 applications received. Nigerians are the majority and are trailed by Syrian, Congolese, Lebanese and Ghanaian asylum applicants.
The fair is held by the São Paulo state government via bodies such as the Aeai, the Secretariat for Justice and Citizenship Defense, and the Secretariat for Employment and Labor Relations.
