São Paulo – Registrations are open for a lecture on elections and democracy in Brazil by political scientist and professor Fernando Schüler. He will speak at 9 am on Wednesday, August 15, at the Walid Yazigi Auditorium, in the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce headquarters in São Paulo. Admission is free.
Schüler will discuss the challenges facing Brazil in 2019 in light of the election results. One of the leading political analysts in the country, he is a frequent source for the media and a staple in debates on the national elections – a hot topic right now, since a new president, state governors, senators, federal and state congresspersons will be voted on in October.
Schüler is a writer for major media outlets, including newspaper Folha de S. Paulo‘s website. He is a professor at Insper, a leading education and research organization active in Business Administration, Economics, Law and Engineering, and widely regarded as one of the premier business schools in Brazil.
He holds a PhD from Columbia University, a doctorate degree in Philosophy from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) and specializations in Public Policies and Governmental Administration from Escola Nacional de Administração Pública (ENAP) and Cultural Management and Ibero-American Cooperation from the University of Barcelona.
A native of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, where he served a stint as secretary of Justice and Social Development, he boasts an extensive track record in research, education and social projects. Schüler created the Fronteiras do Pensamento (Boundaries of Thought) project, featuring conferences and analyses on contemporaneity and future perspectives from leading scholars, artists and scientists.
Schüler also discusses and writes on international politics and geopolitics. At the Arab Chamber, he will cover what each presidential candidate represents and their likelihood of making it into a runoff election. He will also give an overview of probable outcomes.
Also on the agenda will be the alliance system in place in Brazil, whereby candidates and parties can support one another to increase their time on TV and campaign funding. Schüler will delve into the political process in Brazil since the impeachment of Workers’ Party (PT) former president Dilma Rousseff, and give an assessment of MDB-affiliated incumbent Michel Temer’s time in office.
The probability of a shift in National Congress and the structural reforms Brazil is likely to undertake in 2019 will also be addressed, as well as potential long-term changes stemming from them.
