São Paulo – Footwear exports from Brazil went up for the second month on end last February. According to the Brazilian Footwear Industry Association (Abicalçados), 9.97 pairs of shoes got shipped from Brazil during the month, fetching USD 61.58 million. This is up 2.5% in shipped volume and 1.1% in revenue as against January, which had seen a 5% increase from December 2020.
However, year-on-year in February, exports were down 5.9% in volume and 18.1% in revenue. Abicalçados chairman Haroldo Ferreira notes that the numbers indicate a slow recovery since the pandemic began in 2020. “We had our best result since April of last year. However, compared with January and February 2020, when the novel coronavirus pandemic hadn’t broken out yet, the results are poor,” he said in a statement.
According to Ferreira, exports next month will still fall short of those of March 2020. As immunizations begin in other countries, after April, a more substantial recovery is expected to come about.
Destinations
In the first two months of 2021, the United States was the leading destination of footwear exports from Brazil, at 2 million pairs and USD 26.32 million, up 4.7% in volume and down 21% in revenue from a year ago. France ranked second and Argentina ranked third.
Footwear imports to Brazil amounted to 3.97 million pairs and USD 42.94 million, down 24.8% in volume and 38.1% in revenue. Imports from China were up 22% in volume year-on-year.
