São Paulo – Saudi Arabia is expected to take a leading role in the games and e-sports industry, driven by its high consumption in the segment. According to a story published on the Arab News website, based on a Boston Consulting Group (BCG) report, purchases in the Saudi market in the sector stood at USD 959 million in 2020 and are expected to reach USD 6.8 billion by 2030.
The study estimates an average annual growth rate of 22% for Saudi gaming consumption in the coming years. “Despite the Kingdom being a relatively recent entrant to this space, the industry is vibrant and fast-growing, nevertheless,” said BCG partner Povilas Joniskis.
Joniskis said passionate gamers are driving the growth and popularity of the industry in the country. He believes these people will pursue full-time careers in the field and get involved internationally. The report points out Saudi Arabia has 23.5 million gaming enthusiasts, representing 67% of the population.
Despite the growth potential, the Arab country is at an early stage in the sector compared to other international markets, according to the survey. BCG points out as obstacles the lack of funding for competitors to dedicate themselves full-time to gaming, absence of local tournaments and pathways to professionalization, and stigmas associated with careers in games and e-sports.
