São Paulo – Fitness clothing company Canoan, out of Campinas, São Paulo, embarked on an exports plan 11 months ago. It worked out so well that the enterprise now ships product to 26 countries, among them the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Qatar.
“A big part of distribution is done via e-commerce. We do active client prospecting work online and we are aware of what they’re seeking when it comes to clothing,” says Export manager Eduardo Gomes.
Canoan makes women’s tank tops, pants, overalls, bodysuits, skirts, shorts, dresses, Bermuda shorts and gym coats. “We also produce private label items (under the buyer’s own brand) and men’s pieces on demand,” says Gomes.
He reveals the top-selling item in Arab countries. “The bestseller in the Middle East is mini skirt tights,” he explains. According to the manager, the item accounts for 60% of all sales to that region. It’s a tight pant with a skirt-like cover.
Gomes adds that Arabs enjoy items made from Emana and high Supplex fabric. “Emana eliminates the sweat better and high Supplex is more elastic,” he points out. Middle East buyers are also fond of basic crop tops and regular tight pants. Top-selling colors are neutral, including navy blue, black, and grey.
In the UAE, the items are sold at two malls in Dubai, Gomes says. In Egypt and in Qatar, they’re resold by wholesalers.
Canoan’s biggest foreign market is the United States, followed by Russia and Spain. Gomes will not disclose the company’s total output, but says 60% of production gets shipped to other countries.
The manager also tells that in the next six months the company plans on finding distributors in all of the countries it exports to, besides aiming for major growth in export revenues. “We have already doubled our revenue since we began exporting, and now we’re looking to quadruple it,” he says.
