São Paulo – A high-priced dollar can generate good results to companies that export, despite the Brazilian economy deceleration. That’s the case with Emirates SkyCargo, the cargo division of Emirates Airline. The company from Dubai is attending this week in São Paulo the logistics and cargo fair Intermodal South America. In an interview to ANBA this Tuesday (7th), the company’s vice-president of cargo for the Americas and South of Africa, Duncan Watson, said that the appreciation of the dollar against the real can help to maintain or even elevate the volume carried, even in a low-growth scenario.
“We can’t deny or avoid facing the economic situation, but even in these moments there are opportunities. The devaluated currency [against the dollar] is an opportunity to increase exports and we are facing this reality in Brazil. This is also happening in Europe, where the devaluated euro is bringing exports up”, said Watson.
Another opportunity for Brazil is the increase of shipments of perishable products, which accounts to approximately 25% of the total carried in the company’s aircrafts holds around the world. “In South America, the participation share of these products in the total shipped is higher. I mean flowers, vegetables, meats, fruits, well, perishables in general. These are products that these countries produce and that need to arrive early at its destinations. It’s a niche that can be developed”, declared Watson.
The company operates two flights with a cargo plane Boeing 777F at Viracopos airport, in Campinas, São Paulo’s inland. Besides, it uses the holds of passenger aircrafts in the daily routes from Dubai and São Paulo and Dubai and Rio de Janeiro. In South America, Emirates SkyCargo also flies to Ecuador.
According to Watson, the volume of products that the company carries between Brazil and the United Arab Emirates is not large. Shipments to Europe carry larger volumes, followed by shipments to Asia and the Middle East. The trade relations between Brazil and the United Arab Emirates can be expanded, says the executive, if the potential of the two markets is explored.
“Dubai is growing, buying and hosting even more tourists. And here we have a strong, large market. If the niches are explored, the trade relations will have all the elements needed to expand”, said the executive.
