Brasília – Brazil cereal, pulse and oilseed output is expected to increase by 2.3 million tons, or 1%, to 228.8 million tons in 2019. The estimate, from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), is down 0.8% from the one issued in January.
Planted area is expected to be 61.9 million hectares, up 1.7% year-on-year and down 0.3% from the January forecast. Rice, maize and soy are seen making up 93.3% of total output, and 87.3% of farmed lands.
The National Supply Company (Conab) also released its crop forecast this Tuesday (12). Conab works crop years (2018/2019), whereas the IBGE works with regular years.
The Conab believes 2018/2019 will see Brazil’s grain crop increase by 2.5% to 233.3 million tons. The estimate is down 0.4% from the last survey.
“We had a few weather issues which harmed soy, rice and bean crops, but maize performed very well, and so did cotton. That is enough to cater to domestic consumption and honor our export commitments in a problem-free way,” said Silvio Farnese, director of the Sales and Supply Department at the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply’s Agricultural Policy Secretariat.
