Iraq – The secretary-general of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, asked this Wednesday (1), during his first visit to Iraq in six years, to “lift the country out of recurring cycles of instability and fragility.”
“I am here on a solidarity visit to highlight the UN’s commitment to supporting Iraq in consolidating its democratic institutions […] and granting human rights to all Iraqis,” said Guterres in a press conference alongside the prime minister of Iraq, Mohamed Chia al Sudani.
Guterres expressed “hope” the country will be able to break the “recurring cycles of instability and fragility” to commit to greater “prosperity, freedom and peace.” The UN chief celebrated Iraq’s “central” role in “regional stability” and “the government’s commitment to promoting dialogue and diplomacy.”
This Thursday, his schedule included a visit to a camp for the displaced in the country’s northern region before heading to Erbil to meet with representatives of the regional government of Iraqi Kurdistan.
