São Paulo – The author of two books on the subject, the Rio Grande do Sul state native Sílvia Ferabolli is delivering a lecture on international relations in the Arab world next Tuesday (13th) at the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce, in São Paulo. She will discuss intra-Arab relations and cooperation, the topic of her latest book, Arab regionalism: a post-structural perspective, released by the British publisher Routledge in 2014.
Ferabolli will expound on the concept of one single Arab nation, which was once a regional plan, and what is left of it. “What is left of this major process and how Arab cooperation has evolved,” she says. She will also touch on the Arab League’s existing Greater Arab Free Trade Area (Gafta), intra-Arab capital flows, the regional financial organization, and other topics. The lecture will also cover the Arab world’s relations with other Middle Eastern countries such as Iran, Turkey and Israel.
Ferabolli says she started doing research because she wanted to tackle the matter from a different perspective. The Arab world was the topic of her master’s paper, which led to her first book, Relações Internacionais do Mundo Árabe: os desafios para a realização de uma utopia pan-arabista (International Relations in the Arab World: the challenges to achieving a pan-Arab utopia), released by Brazil’s Juruá publishing house in 2009, currently in its second edition, issued in 2013. She pursued her master’s degree from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS).
Ferabolli’s second book was the subject of her doctoral degree, which she completed at the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies. There, she also completed complementary Middle East studies on subtopics like Islam and politics, modernity, economics and business, international policy and others. She also served as a teaching fellow at the same university’s Department of Studies and International Politics from 2008 to 2012.
Sílvia Ferabolli started her career by pursuing a degree in Journalism from Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos (Unisinos), in São Leopoldo, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. She is currently an International Relations professor at Unisinos and at UniRitter, another local university, and conducts research into Arab regionalism and Arab-South American inter-regionalism. Ferabolli is invited to lectures and debates on the Arab world on a regular basis.
