Amman – Jordan is going to start releasing great infrastructure projects that may interest Brazilian companies. The topic was discussed on Thursday night (12) by Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce president Salim Taufic Schahin, by the president of the Federation of Arab Businessmen, Hamdi Tabba, and by the vice president of the Jordanian Businessmen Association, Thabet Taher, during a meeting in Amman.
One of these projects is the generation of energy. The country needs to expand its supply of electricity and must build a thermal electric power plant with a capacity for 300 megawatts. “The purchase of energy is guaranteed by the government,” said Tabba.
Inquiries to companies should begin in coming months. “Maybe next year,” said Taher. The government wants to negotiate proposals directly with the interested companies.
Currently, a large part of the gas used for the generation of energy in Jordan comes from neighbouring Egypt, but the country has reserves to develop its own production, according to businessmen. Taher knows what he is talking about. He has already been the minister responsible for the sector.
Another large enterprise is the construction of railways to connect the country to Saudi Arabia and Syria. The Syrian railway grid connects to Turkey and, with the Jordanian network, there should be a connection with the Gulf, Europe and the Mediterranean. Jordan has a railway grid, but it has a narrow gauge and needs to be converted into a broader gauge.
The director at the Arab Brazilian Chamber and honorary consul of Jordan to São Paulo, Mustapha Abdouni, also participated in the meeting.
