São Paulo – Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Sabah, 83, was announced as the new emir of Kuwait on Saturday (16), following the death of his half-brother and former emir, Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Sabah, on the same day after an emergency hospital admission in November.
Sheikh Nawaf al-Sabah had been the emir of Kuwait since 2020, but in 2021, he delegated responsibilities to then crown prince Sheikh Meshal al-Sabah, who dedicated much of his public career to building Kuwait’s security systems and military apparatus. According to information from news agencies, Sheik Meshal al-Sabah is expected to maintain close ties with Saudi Arabia and seek to rebuild the relationship with the Kuwaiti parliament, which blocked several proposals from the previous leader.
Several authorities and global representatives expressed their condolences after Sheikh Nawaf al-Sabah’s death, including the president of the United States, Joe Biden, and the heads of state of Qatar, Palestine, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia, among other countries.
