São Paulo – The architecture of Egyptian temples and tombs, the culture and religiosity of the Pharaohs will be some of the topics covered by historian and Egyptian expert Cintia Gama in the lecture “The ancient Egyptian architecture: temples and tombs”. The talk is scheduled for next Saturday (2) at Fundação Ema Klabin, in the city of São Paulo.
Gama told ANBA this Wednesday (30) that one of the purposes of the talk is to demystify groundless beliefs and theories on the techniques, calculations and architectures of the pyramids and other constructions. “I’ll speak about the meaning of the pyramids, how the Egyptians built the temples and the importance the architecture had for them”, she said.
The pyramids, for instance, were built to be tombs for the pharaohs. Their architecture will be explained by Gama based on documents. “The Egyptian civilization was very long. The architecture shows the evolution and the changes in concepts that this society went through.”
The improvements achieved by the Egyptians in constructions, mathematics and astronomy were the result of people’s need to find solutions for the challenges they faced. “Each civilization develops the knowledge fields necessary to improve. It can fail in some fields and improve in others. Khufu built three pyramids, but two of them failed. He got it right only in the third one”, she pointed out.
The audience of the talk on Egypt varies. The historian notes, however, that part of the audience is made of History and Art History students, since there is very little knowledge and material about Ancient Egypt in Brazil.
Gama worked for five years as scientific consultant in the Department of Egyptian Antiquities of the Louvre Museum in Paris. Among her jobs was to catalogue and review the technical reserve of the museum’s Egyptian antiquities heritage. She is leaving the French museum to return to Brazil to teach history of gastronomy classes at the university centre Centro Universitário das Faculdades Metropolitanas Unidas in the city of São Paulo.
