Brasília – After a ten-day visit to Brazil, Libyan representatives sent a letter to the Minister of National Integration, Ciro Gomes, to express their intention to invest US$ 450 million (R$ 1.340 billion) in irrigation projects. On Friday (20), Libyan government representatives, including Ambassador Mohamed Matare and the general director of the Libyan Foreign Investments Company (Lafico), Hamed El-Houderi, were granted an audience in the Ministry.
During their stay in the country, the Libyans visited enterprises in the areas of agroindustry and tourism. "We had the opportunity to verify great investment opportunities in Brazil," says El-Houderi in the letter addressed to Minister Gomes. According to El-Houderi, Lafico is prepared to participate in irrigation projects covering an area of up to 90 thousand hectares in the Baixio de Irecê and Salitre projects, with investments of up to US$ 450 million.
The Lafico director says in the letter that the intention is to establish joint ventures with Brazilian firms, and they are willing to finance studies of the economic, financial, and social feasibility of the projects. The Libyan company, which has invested a total of US$ 10 billion in 22 countries, informs that it has maintained contacts with Brazilian construction firms to develop the two irrigation projects, both of which are located in Bahia and supplied with water from the São Francisco River.
This information comes from the Ministry of National Integration.
