São Paulo – Brazilian physiotherapist Mariana Lanat (pictured above), a dermatofunctional specialist, helps women take care of their health and has dates among the foods she recommends in her consultations and courses. Focused on offering treatments based on a healthy diet and lifestyle, she saw in the dates the possibility of including a nutritious product, substitute for sweets, and a rich history of cultivation in the patients’ diet. The dermatofunctional field treats disorders related to the skin and its systems.
Lanat sees in the date, which takes many years to grow in the palm, a rescue of values related to how she treats women, back to the natural. “The story of the date is one I make a point of telling people on how they respect the planting and harvesting,” she said. For the physiotherapist, it is vital to consume foods considering the cycle of nature. Dates are widely cultivated in Arab countries.
“My work involves a lot of paradigm shifts, a new way of taking care of your skin and organizing your day, these are simple things; you wake up in the morning, and you can look at the sky, or you can stare at your cell phone or a wall,” she says. Lanat believes food choices need to be compatible with the desired way of life and can define the willingness to pursue dreams. “And Arab products have this strength, this message,” stated the specialist.
Lanat had a history of dermatitis for seven years, which she could not solve with traditional treatments. After her personal experience, she decided to start helping other people take care of their skin in a unique way, without conventional medication. The dermatofunctional work results in something complete, which reflects how patients take care of their food, health, and daily lives as a whole.
The primary basis of the treatment is the recovery of women’s health through the proper functioning of the intestine. Lanat explains people have millions of microorganisms in their intestines, and some species of bacteria are related to the production of serotonin, optimization of the immune system, stamina, and mental clarity, among other functions. “Some types of fiber feed species of bacteria that are greatly beneficial for our health. This happens in the intestine, and the food you eat feeds the best or worst bacteria,” explains Lanat.
The specialist says 95% of the microorganisms living in the human intestine are beneficial; however, when consuming excessive fast food, sugar, and non-nutritious foods, the percentage drops, entailing inflammatory processes common to modern diseases, from cancer to autoimmune conditions, Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia, Parkinson’s, dementia, joint pain, rhinitis, sinusitis, tiredness, dermatitis, among many others.
“If this microbiota is balanced, you create a biological terrain, an environment in the intestine that is fruitful for the best bacteria, you will be feeding them, and they will naturally gain a more elevated proportion, and those that are not so good will naturally starve to death, through natural selection, so it’s a constant balance, everything you do will modulate your intestines negatively or positively,” explained Lanat.
Dates
Dates, rich in fibers, are one of the products that feed beneficial bacteria. “The date fits perfectly in the matter of intestinal health because it has a wonderful flavor,” said the specialist. Lanat usually offers dates to women as an option to replace sweets. The date also favors fecal matter formation easily displaced in the intestinal loop, helping daily bowel movements.
Benefits for the skin come from this good functioning of the intestines. “It’s the intestine that absorbs and delivers nutrients,” said Lanat. In addition to fiber, dates also have vitamins A, C, and D. The specialist mentions the benefits of vitamin A helping improve acne and reducing skin greasiness, while vitamins C and D aid in the formation of collagen and the delivery of minerals to the cells. Lanat also recounts a series of other benefits from dates she perceives in the results of treatments, including the issue of fertility.
Consultations
Mariana Lanat works all these issues with her patients in individual consultations offered online or in person, in the latter case only in Brasília or Salvador. She also gives virtual courses in which groups are formed to monitor the new lifestyle. The specialist currently lives in Bahia, where she was born, after some years living in Brasília, the capital city of Brazil.
Lanat brought dates to her work after meeting Julia de Biase, a Brazilian who has been an importer of dates for the Al Foah brand, from the United Arab Emirates, for around eight years. She usually recommends the brand because she believes the experience of having a quality date, as perceived in Al Foah’s product, can be decisive in the patient’s acceptance of the fruit.
