São Paulo – RVB Malhas, a maker of fabrics from the city of Brusque, in southern Brazil, sought in Morocco, and specifically in the city of Marrakesh, inspiration to create its 2013 winter collection. It was named Riads, in honour of the traditional homes and palaces of Morocco, with their internal gardens. “Generally, from the outside, you cannot imagine the riches and beauty of the interior,” explained the Research and Development director at the company, Ana Julia Benvenuti.
RVB produces several kinds of knit and, according to Benvenuti, the idea behind Riads is to spread throughout the collection, from the colour list to the knit – thought considering the textures present in the architecture of these homes and palaces -, aligned to the main fashion tendencies. According to the stylist, around 30% of the products in the 2013 collection have direct influence of Riads.
“The main idea of the collection is not the Riads themselves, but their cultural collaboration. We observed the importance of celebrating the local culture with its tradition and natural beauty and the interference of the western culture which arrives with design and sophistication,” said Benvenuti. Most of these constructions, according to her, were purchased by foreigners, who restored them and made them into luxury hotels or restaurants.
According to material disclosed by the organisation, the collection brings the colours, textures, aromas and flavours of Marrakesh. “Candles, teas, fabrics, carpets, lighting fixtures, spices, cuisine, architecture, the old and the new, indeed, an explosive and inebriating combination that integrates and seduces through all senses,” disclosed the company. All this Moroccan magic, according to RVB, is brought together in Moroccan places with their central patios and inspired company creation.
RVB releases two collections a year and from 2013 on should release three. For winter next year, the company is offering 51 options, from chalk white, beige, grey and black to maroon, dark brown, café-au-lait, navy blue and greys. There are also reds, like tomato and brunt red, the golden and brunt yellows, peach orange and electrified orange, as well as the sunset tone, which brings Marrakesh to mind.
Among the fabrics offered, there are several new releases like the female Cross, knit inspired on classics like “pied de poule” (a two-coloured fabric whose design recalls a chicken foot), but with the gloss of lurex, the male Agadir, made with recycled cotton raw material with stripes, or the children’s Andalous, colourful stripy material with the subtle gloss of lurex.
RVB makes viscose, polyamide, linen, cotton knit, fitness fabrics, sweatshirt fabric and ribana, among other material. According to information on the company site, production is 350 tonnes a month. RVB has been in the market for over 20 years and has an industrial unit covering over 25,000 square meters. The company employs around 370 people.
