Rio de Janeiro – Natural gas consumption in Brazil was up 9.3% in the first half this year from the first half of last year. Consumption averaged at 77.3 million cubic metres per day, according to the Brazilian Piped Gas Distributors Association (Abegás).
According to Abegás, the sales increase was driven by stronger demand in March and April, from the gas cogeneration and thermoelectric generation sectors. In both cases, natural gas-based thermal generation was required to compensate the low capacity of the country’s reservoirs, especially in the Northeast, Southeast and Midwest.
