Brasília – Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply (MAPA, acronym in Portuguese) reported the Brazilian organic market earned BRL 4 billion (USD 1 billion) last year, a result 20% lower than the one registered in 2017. Data are from Conselho Brasileiro da Produção Orgânica e Sustentável (Oganis), which gathers approximately 60 companies of the sector.
Brazil is appointed by the survey as the leader in the Latin America organic market. However, when considering the land area dedicated to organic agriculture, Brazil is the third in the region, after Argentine and Uruguay, and 12th in the world.
In Latin America, the production area stretches for more than 8 million hectares, which corresponds to 11% of the world area dedicated to organics. In land area, Brazil grew by over 204,000 hectares in ten years, reaching 1.1 million hectares in 2017.
Global market
The global organic market, led by the United States, Germany, France, and China, yielded a record volume of USD 97 billion in 2017. This balance is by the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM).
According to the international federation, around 3 million organic producers are identified in a world of 181 countries. Organic agriculture grew at every continent, reaching a record area of approximately 70 million hectares.
