São Paulo – The International Migration Organization (IOM), affiliated with the United Nations, issued a warning this Friday (24): the flight of Venezuelan citizens to neighboring countries and to the United States, Canada and Spain could quickly evolve into a migrant crisis.
Speaking at a press conference, IOM spokesperson Joel Millman said the situation might escalate fast into a crisis akin to the ones going on elsewhere in the world, notably in the Mediterranean.
He said the international community needs to prioritize funding and the means to address the exodus. According to the IOM and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), approximately 2.3 million Venezuelans are away from their country.
