São Paulo – The musician Messer Di Carlo will teach classes in percussion with the Egyptian tabla, a typical Arab instrument also known as the darbuka. “Workshop on Egyptian tabla” will be held in Brasília on the 31st this month.
The musician will introduce the characteristics of the instrument and teach techniques for students to be able to play. The workshop is designed for both people with some knowledge and rank beginners.
“Usually, students include belly dancers and people who are interested in Arab culture in one way or another, who have travelled to Arab countries or have Arab relatives,” Di Carlo says. He is involved in a tribal music project, plays in a band and teaches classes at drumming school Instituto Alicerce dos Tambores.
Di Carlo is not of Arab descent, but has always nurtured an interest in the culture, particularly Egypt’s. He was born in Cuiabá, in the Brazilian state Mato Grosso, and lives in Brasilia. This year, he intends to travel to the Middle East for the first time and visit Turkey, Iran (which are non-Arab) and Egypt.
“I have been playing percussion since age 14, but became deeply interested in the Egyptian tabla approximately five years ago, as soon as I became aware of the instrument. I bought one and started playing and rehearsing. It has peculiar techniques and a peculiar sound,” says the percussionist, a self-taught Egyptian tabla player.
