Petra – Over one million people have visited Petra historic site in Jordan during 2019, setting an unprecedented record for the city, according to figures from the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA) published at the Jordanian government news agency.
The ancient city of the Nabataeans welcomed 1,135,300 visitors, up 37% from 2018. The total number of foreign tourists surpassed 1 million, up 49% year-on-year. The number of Jordanian and Arab visitors reached 129,144, and the number of students 5,603.
November 2019 was the best month ever in visitor numbers, at 152,576 tourists. December saw 90,539 people passing through Petra, up 32% year-on-year.
PDTRA chairman Sulaiman Farajat that about JOD 11 billion (USD 15.5 million) were invested during the past two years on improving the place’s infrastructure.
