São Paulo – Petrobras, the Brazilian national oil company, announced on November 4 it reached a record number of liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo transshipments between vessels in its regasification terminals. The figure, 104, is the total for the year. The company expects to reach 120 Ship-to-Ship (STS) transshipments by the end of 2021. According to Petrobras, the volume exceeds 103 from 2014, the year with the highest amount so far, and reflects the growth of LNG imports by the company this year.
The product is usually shipped from the country of origin in liquid form. To be used in Brazil, it is regasified, transformed back into a gas, which can be done when transshipped to another vessel via regasification terminals. According to Petrobras, since 2009, when the first LNG terminal in Brazil was opened, 716 STS transshipment operations have been carried out.
“The record is the result of a set of initiatives adopted by Petrobras to expand the natural gas supply, ensuring compliance with its commitments in the current scenario of the national water crisis. And it was only possible due to the effort of the terminal management team to maintain the integrity and availability of the company’s assets, as well as the programming and commercial teams for the acquisition of LNG cargoes on the market, ensuring availability,” informed Petrobras concerning the record this year.
