São Paulo – Brazilian ports handled 1.086 billion tons worth of goods last year, up 8.3% fro 2016, the National Waterway Transportation Agency (Antaq) reported.
Most of the weight handled – 75% – was bulk cargo, especially soy and maize, with soy throughput up 31.5% and maize going up 71.8%.
The Antaq said the busiest state-run port was the Port of Santos, in São Paulo, followed by Rio de Janeiro’s Port of Itaguaí and Paraná’s Port of Paranaguá.
The throughput hike is linked to improved Gross Domestic Product (GDP) performance in Brazil, the agency said.
