São Paulo – The Brazilian Museum Institute (Ibram) should award initiatives by Brazilians for the preservation of the Brazilian memory abroad. Those who develop actions for registration and representation of the life of Brazilian communities abroad may participate. The Ibram is connected to the Ministry of Culture and should grant ten programmes R$ 50,000 (US$ 25,000) each. This is the second time that the Ibram promotes the competition, called “Prêmio Pontos de Memória 2012” (Memory Points Award 2012). It also makes grants to initiatives like these within Brazil.
Activities related to social memory and appreciation, preservation, conservation, communication, accessibility and sustainability of cultural, material or immaterial assets, environments in communities and sites which respect cultural diversity, promotion of human dignity, citizen pro-activeness, the right to culture, to memory and to social and environmental development may enrol.
“Points of Memory appreciate community protagonism and conceive the museum as an instrument for social change and sustainable development. In a plain stage of development, they are capable of promoting better quality of life for the population and strengthening local traditions and ties of belonging, as well as boosting trade and the local economy, contributing to the reduction of poverty and violence,” says the text published by the Brazilian Foreign Office (Itamaraty) on site “Brasileiros no Mundo” (Brazilians Worldwide).
Apart from the R$ 50,000 to be granted to ten Brazilian projects abroad, the award will also grant R$ 30,000 to 50 projects in Brazil. The total to be turned to the project will be R$ 2.010 million (US$ 1 million) in awards, according to the tender. For the choice of the winning projects, items to be taken into consideration will be identification of the project with social museology, community aspects, relevance and social impact, the innovation of the activities, regularity, and viability of execution of the plan, among others.
Enrolment may take place up to February 14 next year on the SalicWeb system, on the sites of the Ministry of Culture (www.cultura.gov.br) and of the Brazilian Museum Institute (www.museus.gov.br). Assistance may be asked for through emails pontosdememoria@museus.gov.br and fomento@museus.gov.br.
