São Paulo – Revenue from sales at supermarkets in Brazil, which has 91,351 stores, reached BRL 554 billion (USD 105 billion) in 2020, the Brazilian Association of Supermarkets (Abras) said. The amount accounts for 7.5% of Brazil’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The industry generates 3 million direct and indirect jobs.
“The revenue from 91,000 stores, with the recent changes we’ve been bringing, are BRL 554 billion (USD 105 billion). This amount includes all supermarket’s distribution channels. We’re talking of physical sales, e-commerce sales, take-away sales,” said Abras vice president Marcio Milan.
He added that the figures include neighborhood grocery stores, traditional supermarkets, mini-markets, and the so-called cash-and-carry models. “These figures we’re bringing now are a new level for Abras, a new information, an indication of the size of the industry that currently serves almost 90% of the population,” he said.
