São Paulo – The University of São Paulo (USP) Ribeirão Preto campus, São Paulo’s countryside, has opened enrolment for modules 1 to 3 of the Dissemination Course: Arab Language and Culture. People willing to take the course may register up until August 8th and classes will start at the same week.
The course will be taught by Ahmed Elgammal, Egyptian teacher of the Arabic language, and by Francirosy Campos, anthropologist and Islam specialist. Classes will be open for the general public.
“Module one is basically for literacy and small sentences. Module three, however, has a bit more of conversation and grammar,” says Campos, course organizer. Among the skills students are to learn in the language are how to introduce oneself, state your place of origin, greet, write one’s own name and even book a hotel.
There are now requirements to register for module one. As regards module three, the student must be literate and know basic structures of the language. The course is new at Usp Ribeirão Preto campus and the modules are gradually being organized. According to Campos, the plan is to have the full course structured in four modules.
As regards the cultural part, which will be taught by Campos, the students will learn about issues such as the Arab migration to Brazil, the role of women in Muslim society, the use of the hijab, male behaviour, marriage and Islam pillars, among other topics.
Module one classes will be on Tuesdays, from 5 to 7.30 pm, between August 12th and December 16th. Module three classes will always be on Monday, from 5 to 7.30 pm, between August 11th and December 8th.
