São Paulo – Real revenues from sales at supermarkets were up 5.94% year-to-date through October, the Brazilian Association of Supermarkets (ABRAS) said. Revenues climbed 12.4% in October from a year ago, and 7.35% in July from September.
“Our year-to-date results reflects how the consumer behaved during the pandemic, prioritizing the consumption at home, and the emergency aid,” ABRAS chairman João Sanzovo Neto was quoted as saying in a press release. The emergency aid is a monthly financial aid provided by the Brazilian government to low-income families during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The increase in sales at supermarkets is higher than the 3.9% ABRAS expected last January. The association’s chairman believes it’ll remain around 5% in the following months.
