São Paulo – The ground floor of São Paulo mall Shopping D (pictured above) will host Arab dance and cuisine fest Um Dia nas Arábias (A Day in Arabia) in the weekend of September 22-23.
Middle East refugees living in Brazil will participate. The mall’s PR office said the goal is to showcase the richness of Arab culture as well as exercise solidarity.
Typical Arab foods, drinks and products will be available from 25 tents, including Syrian sweets, kibbeh, sfiha, grape leaf rolls, Moroccan rice, hummus, falafel, etc. Clothing, artisanal perfumes, exotic accessories and items will also be on sale, and Arab music and dance performances will be featured.
The mall said 70% of the tents will be manned by refugees. The space has been made available to them free of charge. They came to Brazil to start their lives over, fleeing conflicts and wars back in their own countries.
“We look at this event as an interesting way to spread knowledge about other cultures and integrate different peoples, as well as to help this cause,” a press release quoted Shopping D marketing manager Rhuann Destro as saying.
The event will run from 2 pm to 10 pm on Saturday and from 2 pm to 8 pm on Sunday. Admission costs 1 kg of non-perishable food, which will be donated to refugee families, the mall said.
Shopping D is managed by CCP (Cyrela Commercial Properties), with 200-plus retail outlets.
