São Paulo – Olive oil, its manufacturing process and consumption will be covered in a workshop at 10 pm next Thursday (22) at Universidade Aberta do Meio Ambiente e da Cultura da Paz (UMAPaz, the Open University for the Environment and Peace Culture), in São Paulo.
The event will cover subjects including olive tree cultivation, the harvest of olives, screening and milling, olive oil classification, its health advantages, and physical-chemical and sensory analyses. Discussions will be followed by a tasting of olive oils and a raffle of olive tree seedlings.
The meeting comes in the week of November 24, World Olive Oil Day. The date was created by the International Olive Council (IOC) and is celebrated in several countries.
The event at UMAPaz is hosted by the Brazilian Association of Olive Oil Producers, Importers and Traders (Oliva), with backing from São Paulo’s Municipal Secretariat for Nature and the Environment (SVMA). Organizers said this will be the first-ever official celebration of the World Olive Oil Day in São Paulo.
One of the event’s purposes is to spread awareness of the health benefits of an olive oil-rich diet. October 2017-September 2018 saw about 75,000 tons of olive oil consumed in Brazil. This is expected to increase by 4% in 2018/2019.
Italy leads the ranking of olive oil consumption in the world, trailed by Spain, the USA, Turkey, Greece and Morocco, as per numbers from the IOC’s Advisory Committee on Olive Oil and Table Olives. The leading supplier to Brazil is Portugal, followed by Spain, Argentina, Chile and Italy.
Although Arab countries do not rank among the leading suppliers of the product to Brazil, their relevance is growing, according to data compiled by the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce. Last year saw them ship USD 2.1 million worth of olive oil to Brazil. From January to September 2018, the amount nearly doubled to USD 4 billion. Tunisia provided the near-entirety of olive oil shipped to Brazil from Arab countries – at 95.5% in 2017 and 99.6% in 2018.
