São Paulo – The Belenzinho unit of the Social Service for Trade (Sesc), in the East Side of São Paulo, will offer free Arab dance lessons for men and women starting on the 3rd of July. The classes will take place on Sundays in July, from 04:00 pm to 05:30 pm.
Any person over 16 years of age can participate and no previous knowledge of dancing is required. Students will learn which are the main dancing styles of the Arab world and also have classes on the movements involved in belly dance, baton dance, veil dance and haligi, another folk dance from the region.
The course teaches the movements and the use of basic elements such as the veil. Other tools used in the performances, such as lit candles, chalices with water and even material such as earth and ether may be used in the performances. Although these other objects are not part of the classes, students will get an introductory lesson on the use of the elements of nature by professional dancers. According to the teachers, these materials and tools are part of the festive symbols in Arab culture.
