São Paulo – Brazilian publishing house Tabla will hold a short course on the history of Iraq based on the literary works on the country launched by it. The course will encompass three free online classes, with the first being on Tuesday (20), and then on June 27 and July 7, always at 7:30 pm. Registration is open. The short course Brief History of Iraq, taught in Brazilian Portuguese, aims to delve into historical events, ancient histories and contemporary challenges of the Arab country. The classes will address three landmark events, namely the foundation of Baghdad, the dictatorship of Saddam Hussein, and the United States military invasion.
The short courses of Tabla are aimed at teachers and professors, students, researchers, readers, and other people interested in learning more about the cultures and histories of the Middle East and North Africa. The publisher promotes the literature of the region by translating major literary pieces from those countries into Brazilian Portuguese and publishing them in Brazil.
The course on Iraq is based on the short story collection Baghdad Noir and the novel The Bird Tattoo. The first collects 14 stories set in various areas of Baghdad. The latter tells the story of Helen, a woman kidnapped and held captive as a sex slave by the Islamic State — also known as ISIS — in Iraq.
The first class will be “Baghdad: The Jewel of the Middle East” by Samira Osman, while the second will be “The Iraq of Saddam Hussein: Enchantment and Tyranny” by Murilo Meihy, and the third “Iraq on Fire: US Invasion and National Turmoil” by Renatho Costa. Registered participants attending at least 75% of the classes will receive a completion certificate.
