São Paulo – The objective is to win Brazilian and foreign markets with a special kind of crustacean: organic shrimp. If the traditional version of the delicacy appeals to the taste buds of many people, executives at Nutrimar Pescados guarantee that the organic version, produced sustainably, is even tastier. And profitable, costing 40% more.
Thus, investing in the product, and in the release of items like frozen ready dishes, the company plans to double revenues, which totalled 60 million reals (US$ 36 million) in 2010. For such, investment of US$ 24 million is forecasted this year. In the foreign market, the company’s main targets are Europe and the Arab nations.
"In the Middle East, we already export organic shrimp to Dubai," said the executive director at Nutrimar, Fabrício Ribeiro. "The Arab countries are very important buyers for us, appreciating Brazilian shrimp," he explained. After the Emirates, Egypt should be the second market to be worked in the region. "We know that, mainly due to the great tourist flow, the consumption of seafood there is very high," said Ribeiro.
But, what exactly is organic shrimp? "It is shrimp produced following a series of criteria, like having a permanent preservation area within the space where the crustaceans live, for example," said Ribeiro.
All of the company employees, over 400, in the case of Nutrimar, are officially taken on and their labour rights are guaranteed according to the Brazilian legislation. Another important fact: the shrimp cannot be fed on industrialized feed, only on microalgae and zooplanktons. "The result is healthier, redder and tastier shrimp," he said.
Apart from shrimp, Nutrimar also produces salmon, cod, lobster, squid, shellfish and fish in general. Production of 400 tonnes a month is developed in Acaraú, on the so-called Black Coast of the state of Ceará, 220 kilometres away from state capital Fortaleza. There is also an administrative base in São Bernardo do Campo, in Greater São Paulo.
In May, the company should release a line of breaded products and ready dishes for sale on the retail market and for bars and restaurants. "We will have options like shrimp stroganoff, four-cheese shrimp and shrimp in oriental sauce," said Ribeiro. "We have noticed that many consumers have a hard time preparing seafood at home and we wanted to offer them practical and quality products," stated the executive at Nutrimar, prepared to win more and more clients by their stomachs, both in Brazil and abroad.
