São Paulo – Industrial automation company Smar, from the city of Sertaozinho, Brazil, has the Middle East among its largest export markets. The company mainly manufactures pressure transmitters and exports to over one hundred countries. The Middle East accounts for one fifth of foreign sales and purchases equipment primarily for the oil and gas industry. The other two major international markets for company products are the United States and Europe.
In the Middle East, Smar sells to the Emirates, Bahrain, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar and Kuwait, as well as to Iran and Turkey, the latter two of which are not Arab nations. The company’s business manager, Adriano Teixeira said that this year exports to the region tripled over 2012 due to the supply of products to a gas refinery in Iran "It is a very strong market. In oil and gas, it is the best market for this type of product," says the manager about the items manufactured by Smar.
The company from Sertaozinho also sells to Lebanon and Jordan and to some African Arab nations, such as Algeria, Egypt and Libya. Sales to the region began with contacts made after Smar participation in fairs in other countries, like the United States and Germany. With these contacts, the company ended up establishing a number of representatives in the Arab nations.
Today Smar attends several fairs in the Arab world, in countries like the Emirates and Bahrain, along with its representatives. According to Teixeira, exports represent over one third of Smar production. Despite the growth achieved in sales to the Middle East in 2013, the company’s international sales as a whole should not grow, mainly due to the economic situation in Europe.
The company has between 30 and 40 products in its production line. The company flagship is the transmitter or pressure gauge. The device can measure the pressure of a boiler or a chocolate tank, for example, and sends the information to a controller. The organisation also produces temperature, density and flow gauges, among others. It also manufactures its own industrial process controllers, which receive information from sensors installed at different points of the production line.
Smar is a family business and was established 40 years ago. It was born to supply the sugar industry. Currently, the company is still providing equipment to this industry, but has also started operating in a large range of sectors, from oil and gas to the chemical, petrochemical and food industries. The company has three units in Sertaozinho and employs between 500 and 600 people in the city. Moreover, it has offices in the United States, Mexico, the Netherlands, Germany, France and England. The organisation also has a factory in the United States and a service centre in Germany.
