São Paulo – Next Saturday, August 20, São Paulo’s Syrian Sports Club, Esporte Clube Sírio, will host the lecture ‘Stories from 25 de março’ [‘Histórias da 25 de Março’] with businessman Fernando Maluhy. He will discuss 25 de Março, a street shopping hub in the central area of São Paulo city, where the first Arab immigrants from Brazil established stores upon arrival. Maluhy has been working in the region for almost 70 years.
Due to the historical connection with Arab immigration to Brazil, the date which gives the name to the street, March 25, was established as the National Day of the Arab Community in Brazil. 25 de Março is still home to shops owned by families of Arab origin, many of which are focused on the textile sector. Still, over the years, it has also welcomed businesses of entrepreneurs from other regions.
