São Paulo – The director the Syrian Sahloul group, Taleb Ali Alrawi, is in São Paulo, seeking sugar. According to him, his company is interested in sugar and plans to purchase between 20 and 25,000 tonnes a month. Currently, the group buys from Egypt and the Emirates. "This is the first time that I come to Brazil. I believe that the sugar imported from Dubai is Brazilian, but we are interested in buying direct," said Alrawi.
To collect information regarding Brazilian companies that export the commodity, Alrawi called for the support of the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce. “Brazil is the world’s main producer of sugar, and we hope to find good prices," said the director, who also has a company in Dubai, Speedx, which works with imports and exports.
Sahloul, which has been on the market for 20 years, also imports fertilizers and oil and distributes to the Middle East. According to Alrawi, the company is also interested in starting trading meats, soy oil and cashew from Brazil.
Alrawi visited the Arab Brazilian Chamber offices on Thursday (2) in the company of his Syrian colleague, Ali Mahmoud Faraj, who is the director of the JV Syrina, from Syria. Faraj said that he is also interested in buying from Brazil, but his interest is in soy, maize, barley, powdered milk and cashew nuts. Apart from distributing in the Middle East, he also exports to the Ukraine.
Sugar
The commodity is among the main Brazilian items shipped to the Arab world. From January to July, sugar exports to the region totalled US$ 1.76 billion, which represented growth of 45% over the same period last year.
