Damascus – Olive production in Syria this season is estimated to increase 6%, state news agency SANA reported based on data from technical committees of the Agriculture and Agrarian Reform Ministry of the Arab country.
Syria’s production is expected to reach nearly 740,300 tons, an increase over the previous season. Olive season harvest in the country runs from October to December and can extend to January.
There is also expectation to produce nearly 94,800 tons of olive oil, knowing that the amount of oil was calculated at 16% of the weight of the fruits.
The highest production this season is expected in Hama province with a quantity of 92,000 tons, followed by Homs with a quantity of 82,800 tons, then Lattakia with 47,600 tons, Damascus countryside with 40,300 tons, Idlib with 35,600 tons, Aleppo with 33,800 tons, Tartous with 32,000 tons, and Daraa with 28,700 tons.
Syria’s olive tradition
Syria exports olive oil, but local consumption is significant. Last year, the government suspended exports to cater to domestic demand. Olvie trees are part of the country’s history and tradition. The Mediterranean climate and mountain soil in part of the Arab country are beneficial to olive growing, which is a relevant source of income for the population.
