São Paulo – Nonus, a São Paulo-based technology company is looking to increase its sales abroad and will attempt to resume selling to Tunisia, the Arab country in North Africa. The company makes commercial automation products such as cheque and payment slip scanners, and sold approximately 1,000 pieces of equipment to Tunisia from 2007 to 2011, according to commercial director Marcos Canola.
Sales stopped after the country underwent political changes. However, Nonus is taking advantage of the fact that the US dollar price is high at this time, which is beneficial to exports, to focus on international sales. One of the goals is to get back in touch with former contacts and get back to selling to Tunisia and to other countries that are already being worked on.
The company first made contact with the Tunisian buyer, who used to purchase cheque scanners, at the CeBIT technology industry fair in Hannover, Germany. By the way, it was at the event – which Nonus took part in for five straight years leading up to 2006 – that the company got in touch with most of the foreign countries it sells product to. In order to boost overseas sales, the company should also start attending foreign expos anew in 2015.
At this time, Nonus sells 2% to 3% of its production abroad. The leading overseas market for the company is Italy, Canola says. Nonus also sells finished products to Spain and South Korea, and equipment parts to China. Outside Brazil, the strongest demand is for the cheque scanner. This was also the case with Tunisia in the past.
Nonus makes barcode and card scanners, cheque image scanners, vehicle tracking devices and data input/output terminals. The two flagship products are Handbank Eco, a cheque and barcode reader for cashiers and third-party bank service providers, and Homebank, a bank payment slip scanner for online payments designed mostly for household purposes.
Nonus was founded in the 80s by José Domingos Voidella and started out as a technical assistance provider for barcode readers and an importing company. In the 90s the company became a manufacturer and presently has two other partners besides Voidella, one being Marcos Canola.
The industry is based in southside São Paulo’s Parque Jabaquara district, where manufacturing takes place. Some of the parts used are purchased from third parties. Nonus has 55 employees.
