São Paulo –Tunisia’s government will auction two modern palaces that belonged to former president Zine El Abdine Ben Ali and his family. Ben Ali was ousted in 2011 in the so-called Jasmine Revolution after more than two decades in power and the palaces were seized by the Tunisian government. Many of the luxury movable and immovable assets held by Ben Ali and his relatives were seized and have been put up for sale.
The Amilcar Palace, located in Sidi-Bou-Saïd, historical village on the bay of Tunis, is a 7,376 square meters of structure with 138 rooms in a 11,396 square meters property.
The palace includes a study room, seven bathrooms, reception room, office, four elevators, a 314 square meters kitchen, multimedia room, dining room and archives room. The palace’s main bedroom has 82 square meters.
The Marina 44 Palace is in a 3,524 square meters property in the resort of Yasmine Hammamet. The structure has 3,353 square meters with 64 rooms divided for five floors. The place has 11 suites, 20 bathrooms, an office, four kitchens and two elevators, among other rooms.
The two palaces are located less than an hour from downtown Tunis, the country’s capital. The auctions are being conducted by public agency Gammarth Immobilière. According to the Tunisia’s embassy in Brasília, the country has already sold other palaces, which were acquired by foreign investors from countries such as the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.
