São Paulo – Rubens Ricupero, secretary general of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (Unctad), pointed out on Thursday (17), during a press conference, that one of the ways to reach competitiveness on the international market is through trade fairs. He referred to, among others, Fispal Alimentos, which is taking place in the Anhembi pavilion, in São Paulo. "I place great importance not only on the deliberations and discussions in the Conference, but in concrete presentation (of products and services) at fairs," pointed out Ricupero. This information was provided by the Fispal/Unctad press department.
Regarding the conference, the ambassador pointed out two victories: the beginning of the third round of negotiations for trade barriers by developing countries – the system for trade preferences -, unanimously approved yesterday, and approval, by the committee of the general assembly, of the text of the central document regarding coherence and development policies, reached after tough negotiation that started months ago in Geneva. "Both central points of the conference are already approved," he stated.
He added that the conference has had over 50 different events up to the moment, with discussions having started in Rio de Janeiro, last week, where the topic of the gas and oil industry was discussed. One of the topics under debate was how to make small and medium companies participate in this sector, and how to administer the risk of price oscillation.
"We discussed Brazilian presence in more dynamic sectors of world trade. We had meetings with India after which trade can be increased. According to our calculations, this increase can be as high as 16 times," stated the ambassador. The cultural industry, genetically modified products, and how to promote equality between women and men through trade, among other topics, were also discussed in the scope of the Unctad.
