São Paulo – The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is open for applications to nominate candidates for the UNESCO-Sharjah Prize for Arab Culture. Awarded since 2001, the prize was instituted in collaboration with the government of Sharjah, one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates, and is now in its 18th edition. Last year, Brazilian historian Silvia Antibas, cultural director at the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce, was one of the awarded. Pictured above, the prize-giving ceremony in 2018 in Paris.

The prize fulfills the organization’s foundational mission of promoting intercultural dialogue, rewarding significant contributions made by people, groups, or institutions to develop, raise awareness, and disseminate Arab culture through artistic, intellectual, or promotional work that enhances mutual understanding. Candidates must have earned an international reputation through meritorious and long-term actions.
Candidate nominations can be made by governments of UNESCO member countries, non-governmental organizations, and foundations that have official partnerships with the organization and work in an area related to the prize, in addition to people already awarded by UNESCO-Sharjah, distinguished personalities, people, and social organizations working with Arab culture, promoting peace and intercultural dialogue. Self-nominations cannot be made.
The deadline for submitting nominations is July 30, 2021, at midnight (GMT +2). The prize is USD 60,000, divided equally between the two winners selected on the recommendation of an international jury assembled for this purpose. To nominate, it is necessary to send an email to the prize secretariat, prix.sharjah@unesco.org, with the name and email address of the nominee. The prize secretariat will send all the required information to the nominee. The entire application process can be done online.
