São Paulo – Driven by the horse breeding and horse race industries in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the Brazilian veterinary manufacturing company Vetnil plans on expanding its presence in the region. The company has had a distributor in Dubai for little over a year, and its sales to the emirate are on the way up, still it believes there is room for more. “Our exports to the United Arab Emirates do not account for much yet, but they have potential for growth,” says Vetnil Foreign Trade coordinator Jonas Pereira.
Vetnil is a veterinary laboratory that has been on the market for over 20 years, focusing mostly in nutraceutical products, i.e. dietary supplements designed to help animals recover from illnesses. The items include Hemolitan, which contains vitamin B and folic acid, and may be used in cases of anaemia or to strengthen pregnant mares and help prevent abortions. The company caters to all species, but focuses mainly on pets and horses. Vetnil also manufactures veterinary medication such as anaesthetics, antibiotics and others.
The company has been selling to the Arab countries for approximately five years. According to Pereira, supplying the Emirati market is a sort of merchandising for the company, because they have some of the finest horse specimens. Dubai hosts horseback riding contests and sheikhs traditionally invest in this type of animal. Some of Vetnil’s horse products can also be used on camels, and this increases the company’s market in the region even further. Vetnil’s products are distributed in the Emirates by Gulf Rider.
Vetnil’s premier market is Brazil, but the company is increasing its foreign market presence. Without citing any figures, the foreign trade coordinator notes that exports were up 50% in the first half this year from the first half of 2012. The company supplies 13 countries, most in Latin America. Apart from Brazil’s neighbouring countries, Vetnil ships product to Portugal and Angola, as well as the Emirates.
Vetnil’s plant is located in Louveira, in the state of São Paulo. The company has 150 in-house collaborators and 50 outside personnel. The company is family-run and was established by the now-deceased veterinary physician João Carlos Ribeiro. The company is currently run by the family’s second generation.
