São Paulo – Yesterday (8), in the city of Araçuaí, in the southeastern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, Hydroelectric Power Plant Juscelino Kubitschek (Irapé) was inaugurated. The mill was built by electric energy company Cemig and is the largest enterprise developed in Jequitinhonha Valley, one of the poorest regions of the country. The mill received investment of R$ 1 billion (US$ 440 million) and has a capacity to supply 1 million people.
Irapé power plant was built on Jequitinhonha River. With a capacity for generation of 360 megawatts, the plant will mainly benefit ten cities, with a total population of 132,000 people. The government of the state of Minas Gerais participated with investment of R$ 120 million (US$ 53 million), and the rest came from Cemig.
