São Paulo – To portray the Arab culture beyond belly dancing. That’s what the Egyptian Saad Amro planed two years ago when he noticed that in Brasilia, the city where he lives, there weren’t any activities that would portray the culture of his people to the people of the country that he chose to live in since 2005.
Thus, Oriente-se was founded, a company for cultural events and translation, which works with party production and promotion, exhibitions, concerts and theater plays with Arab themes. “At Oriente-se, the focus is on presenting cultural proposals that are different of what already exists in Brazil [concerning the Arab culture]”, said Amro.
The first event of the company was an exhibition about Ancient Egypt. “It was a success. We showed not only the statues, but also their stories and the philosophical side of our culture”, he said. In the following year, the company did the promotion of the Arab Week, an initiative promoted by Arab embassies at Brasilia National Theatre.
In 2014, the company promoted the event Caminhos que se encontram (Crossed Paths), with concerts and poetry of Arab countries such as Egypt and Lebanon and other oriental nations such as Turkey, Azerbaijan and Greece. “We showed a literary side in the cultural events, and that makes a difference”, he emphasized.
Among the activities promoted by Oriente-se are also concerts with the band of Mediterranean and Arab music Kervansarai, and the presentation of the play Pipocas de Papiro, a comedy that portrays the cultural side of Egypt, produced by a Rio Grande do Sul-based group.
This month, Oriente-se is taking part in a culinary fair with tents of Egyptian food. “We will add explanations with the historical side of each dish to be presented. It’s a combination of food and culture”, pointed out Amro. For this year, the businessman also said to be planning a musical event with an Egyptian artist and an exhibition about the history of sports in the world.
Anyone interested in the works of Oriente-se and that wants to hold and Arab event can also hire Amro. “Currently, I’m working with private events, such as birthday parties and marriages”, he said.
