São Paulo – A special Brazilian Ministry of Justice program will feature free attractions throughout this week to mark World Refugee Day (June 20). The Ministry’s Black Hall is hosting the exhibit No Fluxo: Reflexos da Migração e Refúgio de Mulheres no Brasil (In Flux: Reflections of Female Migration and Asylum in Brazil, pictured above) from June 25 to 29, with photos of people who overcame persecution, violence and discrimination by relocating to Brazil as migrants or refugees.
The exhibit opens 7 pm on Monday with a roundtable discussion on the challenges of putting in place policies to protect and integrate refugees. Panelists will include Justice minister Torquato Jardim, federal attorney-general Carlos Eduardo Barbosa Paz, UNHCR representative to Brazil Isabel Marquez, and other authorities. The exhibition is offered by Brazil’s National Committee for Refugees (Conare) and Federal Public Defender’s Office, as well as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
The program will also include the documentary film Fuocoammare (2016, Italy, 1h54) and the short film Welcome to Canada (2017, Canada, 20 min), both of which are international productions about the refugee adaptation process.
Fuocoammare (Fire at Sea), by Gianfranco Rosi, will be shown from noon to 2 pm on June 25 and 29 at the Justice Ministry’s Tancredo Neves Auditorium, in partnership with the Embassy of Italy in Brazil. Welcome to Canada will be featured in continuous projection in a UNHCR tent to be put up in the Black Hall on June 25, 27 and 29, in partnership with the Embassy of Canada in Brazil.
Refugee Week will end with the launch of Atlas da Migração Refugiada (the Atlas of Refugee Migration), on the 29th, from 3 pm to 5 pm at the Tancredo Neves Auditorium, in partnership with Núcleo de Estudos de População “Elza Berquó,” a center for populational studies at the State University of Campinas (Unicamp).
